They didn't leave a will. No accounts, no property, nothing with my name on it. What they left was smaller than that — a bowl with a small chip in the rim, fur still caught in the couch no matter how many times I've cleaned it, the habit of stepping around a corner they used to sleep in, even though there's nothing left to step around.
Some pets haven't left anything yet. They're just getting older — a little slower on the stairs, a little less certain around the bowl they've used for years. We build the small things for them too: a dish set at the right height, a ramp with the right grip, so the ordinary days stay ordinary a while longer.
And when the day comes that all that's left is the bowl, the fur, the habit of stepping around a corner — that's the inheritance. Not much. Not heavy. Not worth anything, except everything.
